HISTORIC
third ward association
The Historic Third Ward Association (HTWA) is a nonprofit membership organization that supports a vibrant, dynamic and inclusive mixed-use neighborhood. While preserving the district’s historic charm, the HTWA embraces a forward-thinking future and advocates for economic development, cultural enrichment and community connection.
Celebrating 50 years in 2026, the HTWA is run by a professional staff and a 19-member board of directors made up of representatives from our various business, arts and resident groups. HTWA membership currently includes over 450 businesses, nonprofit organizations and Third Ward residents.
WHAT WE DO
The HTWA markets the Historic Third Ward to locals and visitors through publications, websites, social media, and advertising — including: THREE Magazine and The Guide. The HTWA also organizes and supports many signature neighborhood events that boost community engagement and attract visitors, such as:
Gallery Night MKE
Third Ward Art Festival
Christmas in the Ward
Gather: A Long Table Dinner
Debuting in 2026: Shop, Sip & Savor
The HTWA advocates for the economic vitality of the neighborhood, provides resources and networking opportunities for local businesses, and helps shape the Ward’s identity as a destination for living, working, and entertaining.
While its members join the HTWA for different reasons, they all share a love of the Third Ward — and a desire to help shape a thriving, nationally recognized urban neighborhood that honors its unique heritage while empowering an inspired future.
Members get access to networking events, community leadership opportunities, topical seminars, and chances to be involved in steering future developments in the neighborhood. Learn more about membership by clicking here.
The Historic Third Ward Association is a community catalyst — blending historic preservation with modern economic and cultural energy to keep the Third Ward lively, attractive, and thriving.

CELEBRATING HALF A CENTURY OF HISTORY
In 2026, the Historic Third Ward Association turns 50 — and they’re celebrating five decades of creativity, collaboration and community in the Historic Third Ward.
What began in 1976 as a small group of business and community leaders determined to preserve a fading warehouse district has grown into one of Milwaukee’s most vibrant and beloved neighborhoods. Today, the Ward is a destination for arts and culture, independent shopping, dining, festivals, public spaces and urban living — and it all started with a shared belief in the power of this place.
Fifty years ago, the future of the Third Ward wasn’t guaranteed. Historic buildings were underutilized, and the neighborhood faced an uncertain path forward. The formation of the HTWA marked a turning point — a commitment to preservation, thoughtful development and collective action.
